The Definition Of Leadership

January 6, 2012 Simon Leadership Development

One thing I am asked quite frequently is, “What is the definition of leadership?” and of course, I can never remember the exact quote from my book – yes I know it’s a sign of getting older :) – so I normally faff around with some general distinctions around the difference between managing and leading. So I thought I’d start the new year off with offering a new defintion of leadership:

Leadership is about creating an environment in which people can and do perform to the best of their ability. This is accomplished through high engagement while enabling people to play to their strengths and fulfill their potential. – Simon Cooper 2012

And if you would like to use this quote yourself, please feel free to do so. All I would ask is that you make the appropriate attrribution and provide a link back to this site.

I am also very happy to enter into a debate around my new definition of leadership so please feel free to add your comments to this post.

A happy, healthy and prosperous new year to you all!
Simon :)
